Backflow Prevention Services

What is a Backflow and Why is it Important?

Backflow is a plumbing term that refers to an unwanted flow of water in the reverse direction, which can pose a serious health risk by contaminating the potable water supply with foul water. To prevent this, backflow preventers are essential, and they must be properly maintained. In the most obvious case, a toilet flush cistern and its water supply must be isolated from the toilet bowl, highlighting the need for regular backflow testing and backflow device repair to ensure safety.

Why does the Backflow Test Need to be Completed Annually?

A backflow preventer is an essential device designed to prevent backflow in plumbing systems. The primary method of preventing backflow is through an air gap, which either eliminates a cross-connection or serves as a barrier to backflow. To ensure the effectiveness of a backflow device, regular backflow testing is recommended.

The fundamental mechanism for preventing backflow relies on mechanical backflow preventers, which provide a physical barrier against reverse flow. The main types of mechanical backflow preventers include the reduced-pressure principle assembly, the pressure vacuum breaker assembly, and the double check valve assembly. For optimal performance, proper backflow device repair may be necessary to maintain these systems.

Federal Law mandates that water suppliers must protect their water systems from contamination or pollution caused by cross-connections. To achieve this, backflow preventers need to be tested at least once a year, ensuring they effectively prevent backflow. When issues arise, backflow device repair is essential to maintain their proper operation.

Mechanical backflow preventers contain internal seals, springs, and moving parts that can suffer from fouling, wear, or fatigue, necessitating regular backflow device repair. It's important to note that both mechanical backflow preventers and air gaps are susceptible to being bypassed.

As a result, all backflow preventers need to undergo periodic backflow testing to ensure their proper functioning. A simple visual check suffices for air gaps, but mechanical backflow preventers require testing with properly calibrated gauge equipment.

Testing and Certification

As certified backflow testers, Precision Backflow is committed to simplifying your backflow prevention needs, including backflow testing and certification. If you're a business or commercial property owner, each year the water authority will reach out to you with a form that must be completed by a certified backflow tester. Once you receive this paperwork, contact us so we can carry out the necessary steps for backflow device repair and testing, certify your backflow preventers, and submit your certification to the appropriate water authority in your area. We collaborate with alarm companies, tenants, and landlords to ensure they are notified prior to testing (since it requires the water to be turned off briefly), allowing the certification to be completed promptly. Backflow preventers must be tested annually, as must my testing equipment. I will keep backflow reports for one year from the test date.
